Referring for Reflux

Clinical Presentations 

Referral should be considered for patients presenting with: 

  • Chronic heartburn or regurgitation not responding to PPI therapy 
  • Difficulty swallowing or odynophagia 
  • Persistent cough, hoarseness, or throat irritation related to reflux 
  • Prior endoscopy with oesophagitis or Barrett’s oesophagus 

How to Refer 

Submit a standard gastroenterology referral, noting Reflux assessment”, and include: 

  • Patient history and symptom duration 
  • Relevant investigations (prior endoscopy, 24-hour pH studies, or manometry if available) 
  • Current medications, particularly PPIs or other acid-suppressing therapy

Prerequisites 

  • Prior endoscopy if clinically indicated 
  • Documented symptom history 

How We Care for Your Patients 

  • Gastroenterologist assessment and review of investigations 
  • Further testing may include 24-hour pH monitoring, Bravo study or oesophageal manometry 
  • Individualised management plan including medication adjustment, procedures, or ongoing monitoring
