Dr. Akhilesh Swaminathan

Akhilesh is an Australasian-trained Gastroenterologist who graduated from the University of Otago, New Zealand in 2013. He completed his specialist training at Christchurch and Auckland, New Zealand and was awarded Fellowship to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2023. Following this, he completed subspecialist training in inflammatory bowel diseases at The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne where he gained further expertise on managing complex cases in a large multi-disciplinary team and was trained in performing gastrointestinal ultrasound. In 2024, he graduated with a a PhD from the University of Otago with a doctoral thesis that focussed on research surrounding non-invasive disease assessment and providing holistic care when managing inflammatory bowel disease.

Akhilesh’s professional focus is providing high-quality patient centred care. In addition to his clinical interests, Akhilesh is passionate about research, having published multiple scientific papers, given invited lectures nationally and internationally and undertaken clinical trials of new pharmaceuticals. He currently holds academic appointments as a Research Fellow with the University of Otago, New Zealand and Senior Lecturer with Griffith University, Queensland. Akhilesh also takes an active role in teaching Medical Students, Medical Residents and Gastroenterology Training Registrars.

  • General Gastroenterology and Hepatology – Akhilesh has experience in diagnosing and managing a broad spectrum of gastrointestinal and liver disorders.
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases.
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy.
  • Gastrointestinal ultrasound – to non-invasively assess gastrointestinal inflammation at the bedside.
